Documentation of wooden figures in St Mary’s Cathedral, Tallinn

Since mid-November is Andres Uueni involved with a new project: Christian Ackermann – Tallinn’s Pheidias, Arrogant and Talented in St Mary’s Cathedral, Tallinn. Working with multispectral camera in Estonian History Museum

Today I visited Estonian History Museum together with Dr. H. Hiiop to find out some additional information about wallpainting (painter: E. Okas, 1987). To research any compositional changes (pentimenti’s), I used a multispectral camera (infrared wavelengths). But although there were some underdrawings, we couldn’t identify any important changes.

Mire preservation and restoration project started in Estonia

Archaeovision R&D, together with the Estonian Fund of Nature (ELF) and the University of Tartu will be participating in the project “Conservation and Restoration of Mire habitats”.  The project will run for five years, during which about 5800 ha of mires damaged by drainage will be restored. During the field inventory that was carried out by ELF between 2009 and 2012, it was found that Estonia has about 240 000 ha of wetlands (5,3% of total area).

Lecture about imaging technologies

Kormpaki On Thursday the 19th March myself and Hembo gave a presentation in St. Nicholas’ Church, Tallinn about imaging technologies and heritage documentation solutions. The lecture was organised by the St. Nicholas’ Church museum together with the Rode Altarpiece in Close-up project.

Rode project visits Rode’s home town

Andres capturing “Madonna with a donor” with robotic camera mount system Archaeovision R&D has been involved in the Rode conservation and research project (see previous posts) for over a year now. Our main tasks have been related to imaging. Last week we were invited to Lübeck,  the hometown of Herman Rode, to document the altar piece and a small painting at  St. Anne‘s Museum Quarter.

Re-use of digital cultural content

Archaeovision R&D is cooperating with Estonian Ministry of Culture in Pan-European project Europeana Space. We visited two-day conference “Digital Cultural Content Re-imagined: New Avenues for the Economy and Society” in Venice, 16-17 October 2014.

Teadlaste öö Niguliste kirikus

Eilse õhtu veetsime Teadlaste öö raames Niguliste kirikus. Ürituse raames Hilkka Hiiop ja Tarmo Saaret tutvusasid Rode altarit ja selle restaureerimise projekti. Mina ja Andres Uueni rääkisime digitaalsetest dokumenteerimis-meetoditest. Välja oli pandud ka mikroskoobid, kus huvilised said tutvuda kuidas 1x1mm suurune killuke maalikihti paistab tuhat korda suuremalt.

Kukruse naise rõivakomplekti ülesvõtmine

Aastaid tagasi sai üles pildistatud Kukuruse naise matus millest sai loodud nii fotogrammeetriline mudel kui ka kõrgeresolutsiooniline foto. Selle aasta juuni kuus veetsime päeva MXM stuudios Tallinnas, et üles võtta Kukruse naise riietest tehtud rekonstruksioonid, eesmärgiga luua fotogrammeetrial põhinev 3D mudel. Päevast sai kokku kirjutatud tore lugu, mis loetav ERMi blogis.

Ajarännak Portuses

Taas on see aeg aastast, mil umbes 50 arheoloogi ning arheoloogia huvilist kogunevad Rooma külje all olevasse Fiumicinosse, et osaleda Antiik-Rooma sadama, Portuse, arheoloogilistel väljakaevamistel. Eriliseks muudab hooaja see, et paraleelselt väljakaevamistega toimub MOOC (Massive Online Open Course) – tasuta internetipõhine kursus Portuse arheoloogiast. Sul on aega pühapäevani (29.06) registreeruda kursusele, materjalid jäävad aga avatuks ka pärast seda.

Imaging hackathon

Two weeks to go until our imaging event in Tallinn St Nicholas’ (Niguliste) church. We have some great presenters and superb venue in a medieval church. Also, we are very excited about the hackathon which will be the culmination of our event. Hereby I am trying to open more about the plans and preliminary ideas. The purpose of the hackathon is to establish an effective prototype for a new way of experiencing and sharing scientific information, using free and open source software.

CAA 2014

Archaeovision R&D will present the ArchaeoLog.IO data management system for the first time in Paris at CAA 2014. It is the 42nd year for CAA conference which gathers people working with computing and technologies in cultural heritage. It is a perfect place to introduce the research and data management tool ArchaeoLog.IO. The paper abstract is available from CAA 2014 website. More information to come soon.

Archaeovision R&D Unit

Archaeovision started as non-profit company Arheovisioon MTÜ in Estonia. It has been very tiny team working mainly with cultural heritage related data presentation in web and documentation and imaging related issues. We have run several training sessions and lectures and have invited people over to Estonia to give lectures. Recent activities include organising the Rode Imaging Event in St.

Rode Imaging Event

We are happy to announce that we are organising an imaging event in Tallinn, in mid May. The event focuses on different imaging technologies used in cultural heritage. The event is structured in three parts: the first day we will have presentations about projects, case studies and technologies; the second day we will go deeper into certain technologies; and at the weekend we will have a hackathon.

RTI Viewer at UK National Archive’s blog

Some years ago we completed some work at the UK National Archives to test RTI technology on a wide range of different examples. Hemp Pagi completed the first test and James Miles completed the second. This work was based on a collaboration between the ACRG and the National Archives. Today they posted a blog post about exploring textures and they are using the RTI viewer WordPress wrapper plugin that we developed some time ago.

Infrared RTI

Last night I took the artwork from my wall and did my first infrared RTI. I would say it is even more exiting than normal RTI as you will see things you are not able to see with naked eye. The artwork that I was taking photos of was not maybe the best to show the potential of IR RTI but I hope to try it it again with a bigger light-source (I used converted Maglite Mini) and more challenging art-piece.
