Just published Terahertz and Cultural Heritage Science: Examination of Art and Archaeology. A. Cosentino “Terahertz and Cultural Heritage Science: Examination of Art and Archaeology” Technologies, 4, 6, 2016. Cultural Heritage scientists need methodologies to examine Art and Archaeology in order to understand artistic materials and techniques and devise better conservation procedures.
We are now offering Online Training modules. Traveling is expensive and requires time that many professionals can’t afford. CHSOS wants to disseminate its methods as much as possible and we have now an online educational program. Get our Training modules, without added travel costs. We just published the new Free XRF Spectroscopy Database of Pigments Checker. Pigments Checker is a collection of swatches of historical pigments that offers art professionals, conservation scientists, conservators and fine art photographers, a tool to evaluate and test their imaging and spectroscopic methodologies for pigment identification.
CHSOS offers the Technical Photography Filters Set at 970 euro + 20 euro shipping. They are the 4 filters (52 mm thread) that we use for our Art examination service and we test in our research publications. Visit our Technical Photography Filters Set page for more info.
We are celebrating our new Studio! We moved to an 80 square meters (860 square foot) open space. It is an historical building (XVIII century) in downtown Viagrande, Italy, the Sapienza Palace.
CHSOS website has enjoyed the engagement of a wide community, we reached 6000 views / month. Art community follows our updates, requires on-site art examination or training programs. CHSOS collaborated with Catania (Sicily) Archaeological authorities to contribute Technical Photography Diagnostics on the newly discovered and conserved wall paintings in Nunziatella di Mascali, Sicily. They are dated to the XII century and CHSOS studied them with high resolution Visible, Infrared and Infrared False Color photography.
We just delivered a 3-days Training program to Rene Gerritsen, Fine Art Photographer in Amsterdam. He generously contributed to our Low-cost Multispectral Imaging Crowd funding Campaign. We covered technical photography, infrared reflectography, reflectance spectroscopy, multispectral imaging and RTI.
We just delivered a 4 days training program for Monash University, Australia and Malaysia campuses, in the Monash University Prato Center in Italy. 11 awesome students learned our affordable and sustainable methods for art examination and they were involved in field projects in Prato and Florence.
New York Conservation Foundation (NYCF) invited CHSOS in New York and NJ for three eye-opening and empowering presentations on our systems to do Technical Photography and Multispectral Imaging for Art and Archaeology. The Eastern Analytical Symposium, the New York Microscopical Society, and NYCF provided the lecture and workshop venues.
New York Conservation Foundation invited CHSOS in New York and NJ for three eye-opening and empowering presentations on the Cultural Heritage Science Open Source (CHSOS) system you can assemble to do the Technical Photography and Multispectral Imaging you need for Art and Archaeology full scale and microscopical investigations, examination, and documentation.
We delivered a short course / workshop: Sourcing, assembly, and practical use of CHSOS’ system for microscopical and full scale multispectral imaging, analysis, and technical photography. November 19, 1-5 PM at the Neighborhood Preservation Center, in Manhattan, NYC.
Next week the New York Conservation Foundation brings Dr.
Maria Cristina Caggiani, PhD, expert in spectroscopic techniques for the study of cultural heritage is analyzing Pigments Checker with Raman Spectroscopy (Horiba-Xplora Raman Spectrometer with 3 excitations, 532, 638 e 785 nm), thanks to the collaboration with the Chemistry Department, University of Bari, Italy (Dr. Annarosa Mangone is thanked for the helpfulness).
We released Pigments Checker v.2.1. We constantly add features to improve this tool: It comes with our new Multispectral Imaging calibration card. Commercial gray cards for photography cannot be used for multispectral imaging since they absorb near UV and violet radiation. We developed a gray card to cover the 400-1000 nm spectral range.
We just delivered a 3-days training program for 3 new guests, Dennis and Pam from San Antonio, Texas and Alessandro, an Italian conservation scientist. Dennis and Pam Baltuskonis own Art Conservation Services in San Antonio, Texas and they are our Intl collaborators.
CHSOS is in the Scientific Committee of RECH3, the International Meeting on Retouching of Cultural Heritage.
